Taking place along Spring Street and Salem Street, this project involves the reconstruction of sidewalks and curb ramps to achieve ADA compliance, the installation of curb extensions and a median island to reduce pedestrian crossing distances, and construction of new sidewalk to eliminate gaps in the existing sidewalk network. This project also provides safer channelization for vehicular and bicycle traffic by reducing excess pavement within the intersection and travel lanes and more clearly defining areas of on-street parking.

To elevate the aesthetics of the area, other improvements include street lighting, landscaping, and streetscape features. Construction is currently underway and anticipated to be completed in the Spring.

Paying closest attention to improving the experience for pedestrians, cyclists, shoppers, and diners, the project has helped to revitalize the area – welcoming and encouraging a healthier and more sustainable present and future for Newton residents and visitors.
