Declining water quality and identification of emerging contaminants in existing water supply sources has resulted in reduced overall pumping capacity of groundwater supplies in the Town of Groveland.

EP is working with the Town to develop water supply alternatives to maximize the Town’s allowable groundwater withdrawal volumes while maintaining the high-quality water historically supplied to the Town. EP conducted a desktop evaluation of potential public water supply sites for the Town and identified two potential new source water supply sites.

As is the situation with many municipalities, new source exploration is complex, not only drilling and testing but groundwater modeling to evaluate potential impacts to water quality due to contaminant migration from nearby sources and potential pumping impacts to surface water. In addition to navigating these complexities, EP prioritizes coordination with regulators and stakeholders as an important part of the new source process and is coordinating all activities in advance with MassDEP.

On World Water Day, UN Water reminds us that “Groundwater may be out of sight, but it must not be out of mind.”

We all impact groundwater every single day and this year for #WorldWaterDay, we challenge everyone to think about the impact you make and provide you with the top 10 ways to protect and conserve groundwater according to The Groundwater Foundation.

  1. Go Native
Use native plants in your landscape. They look great, and don’t need much water or fertilizer and choose grass varieties for your lawn that are adapted for your region’s climate
  2. Reduce Chemical Use
Use fewer chemicals around your home and yard, and make sure to dispose of them properly
  3. Manage Waste
Properly dispose of potentially toxic substances (unused chemicals, pharmaceuticals, paint, motor oil, and others). Many communities hold household hazardous waste collections!
  4. Don’t Let It Run
Shut off the water when you brush your teeth or shaving, and don’t let it run while waiting for it to get cold. Keep a pitcher of cold water in the fridge instead
  5. Fix the Drip
Check all the faucets, fixtures, toilets, and taps in your home for leaks and fix them right away
  6. Wash Smarter
Limit yourself to just a five minute shower, and challenge your family members to do the same!
  7. Water Wisely
Water the lawn and plants during the coolest parts of the day and only when they truly need it. Make sure you, your family, and your neighbors obey any watering restrictions during dry periods.
  8. Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle
Reduce the amount of “stuff” you use and reuse what you can. Recycle paper, plastic, cardboard, glass, aluminum and other materials
  9. Natural Alternatives
Use all natural/nontoxic household cleaners whenever possible. Materials such as lemon juice, baking soda, and vinegar are great, inexpensive, and sustainable cleaning products
  10. Learn and Do More!
Get involved in water education! Learn more and share your knowledge with others!
