As the year draws to a close, we want to take a moment to celebrate our incredible people behind Environmental Partners and Apex. This holiday season, our team truly embodied the spirit of giving back to our community!

Together, our team stepped up and fully sponsored the wish lists of 25 children in partnership with Wonderfund, an organization serving kids engaged with the Massachusetts Department of Children and Families. We express sincere appreciation to our 40+ team members’ commitment to ensuring each child receives gifts meant just for them, making a positive impact during some challenging times. A special shoutout to Mollie Scott and Cassandra Thompson who ran the logistics, delivery, and everything in between making this a successful initiative!

At Environmental Partners and Apex, we strive to improve the communities around us, not only through our infrastructure work, but through initiatives like this one. Thank you, team, for showing what we can achieve together.

EP CARES continues with our most recent community outreach initiatives. In late March, approx 20 EP team members gathered to make sandwiches, bag lunches, and baked treats to help feed those in need through My Brother’s Table in Lynn, MA. Our 50 lunch meals and 25 dinner meal bags included handwritten notes of encouragement.

In April, three of our team members presented to two 5th grade classes at the Thomas J. Kenney Elementary School in Dorchester where they led an engaging discussion about STEM careers and different avenues of Engineering with the goal of inspiring the next generation of innovative minds!

Thank you to all who helped in making these happen including EP CARES Committee members: Annie Tucker, Cassandra Thompson, and Gopika Chandran; EP CARES Champions: Javier Avila and Karen Chan; and to all EP volunteers!

On Saturday 1/21, EP volunteers Srushti Shah and Jamie Veillette participated as judges in the Future City New England Competition hosted by BSCES (Boston Society of Civil Engineers Section of ASCE).

Future City is a project-based learning program where students grades 6 through 8 imagine, research, design, and build the cities of the future with innovative solutions. This year’s concept was climate change adaptation and mitigation strategies.

Congratulations to all participants and award winners for their hard work and fresh ideas for a sustainable future!

Over the last few weeks, our team has come together for two efforts to support our communities. November kicked off a food drive that yielded over 200 pounds of donated shelf-stable goods that were distributed to Connecticut Foodshare, Quincy Community Action Programs, Inc., and the Woburn Council of Social Concern.

December brought a new commitment – supporting Wonderfund in their pursuit to ensure that children in the foster care system throughout the Commonwealth of Massachusetts receive the clothes they need to stay warm and dry this winter and the gifts they desire for the holidays.

The EP team successfully fulfilled the wish lists of 15 children ages 2-15 and was able to provide additional gifts, including highly requested gift cards to be distributed by the organization as needed. We share to express deep appreciation to the (roughly) sixty team members who contributed to these events, helping wonderful organizations make an impact by providing food, clothing, and gifts to hopefully spark a bit of holiday joy and comfort during challenging times.

A special shout-out to Annie Tucker and Mollie Scott for owning the roles of Lead and Champion (respectively) for the gift drive and making certain that everything ran smoothly and was received on time.

Environmental Partners is proud that much of our work aims to help communities become safer and more accessible for all. Currently, EP’s transportation group is assisting several municipalities with the MassDOT Shared Streets and Spaces Grant Program. To date, the communities of Hanson, Gloucester, Westwood, and Whitman have all been awarded funds to implement interventions that calm vehicular traffic and provide safer conditions for all users.

EP’s breadth of support for these municipalities has included identifying project locations, developing conceptual designs, leading the grant application effort, completing final design plans, obtaining necessary local permits, and providing construction administration services. Proposed treatments include reconstructing ADA-compliant pedestrian curb ramps and sidewalks, installing pedestrian-activated warning devices including Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons (RRFBs), tightening intersection corners, and constructing curb extensions to shorten pedestrian crossings and improve sight distance.

This year, EP staff, friends, and family walked, donated, and fundraised for the Massachusetts Chapter of The ALS Association. While many are and have been affected by amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), Team EP walked alongside a team member who lost a loved one to ALS this year and raised funds in their honor, helping the Massachusetts chapter raise nearly $90,000 that will support those living with ALS, treatment, and ultimately a cure.

We were honored to be able to support our EP Family and the organization that helped them through a difficult time.

In 2020, EP partnered with Northeastern University to create a new scholarship opportunity supporting efforts to increase diversity within engineering. Ryan Trahan, EP’s COO and a NEU College of Engineering alumnus, was interviewed for a piece featured in Engineering @ Northeastern in Spring 2021. In the article, Ryan shared:

“The AEC Industry has historically struggled with diversity and inclusion. While I believe there is more work to be done, we’ve actually seen great progress in gender inclusivity over the last 20 years, as more women pursue STEM careers. What’s particularly alarming is how underrepresented minorities are in our fields…As a company we asked ‘How can we encourage diversity and create greater opportunities?'”

The first recipient of the Environmental Partners Scholarship, Jean Inoa, was announced in March and we look forward to funding this annual scholarship and seeing the impact these incredible students have on their communities and the engineering industry.
