EP was happy to attend to the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for the Town of Easton’s PFAS Treatment Plant last week!

In June 2020, Town Meeting approved funding for a PFAS engineering study to identify long-term PFAS treatment options. The results of that study recommended the installation of PFAS treatment filter plants at wells 1, 2, and 4. In May 2021, Town Meeting approved funding for construction of the three PFAS treatment plants, which was bolstered by a $2 million grant secured by former State Representative Claire Cronin. Construction began in May 2022 and completed December 2023 with all three plants fully operational. The filter plants are installed with ion exchange resin to filter out PFAS to a level of non-detection.

Thank you to the voters of Easton, elected/appointed officials, Town staff, and in particular the Easton Department of Public Works and Water Division.

April 2023

In the wake of the EPA’s new proposed PFAS regulations, EP continues to assist municipalities throughout the Commonwealth, including the Town of Easton, with PFAS treatment and compliance.

In summer of 2022, the Town of Easton began construction for a PFAS treatment system to address three separate impacted groundwater well sites. Construction has been in full swing and is expected to be complete summer of 2023. This project consists of three separate PFAS treatment systems (one at each site) and as of early spring 2023, the Contractor has finished concrete work, erected the metal building framing, and installed the pressure vessels for the treatment systems.

January 2024

The Town of Easton is now providing PFAS treatment at three of its largest water sources: Wells no.1, 2, and 4R.

EP assisted the Town from the initial planning and water quality study stage to design, procurement, construction administration, and commissioning of the systems. Each of the three wells is now equipped with a media-based PFAS treatment system protected in a heated and dehumidified building. These improvements help the Town provide drinking water that complies with current MassDEP PFAS regulations and the even more stringent proposed US EPA PFAS maximum contaminant levels.

EP is assisting the Town of Medway as the OPM as an agent and advocate for the Town from conceptual design through construction and commissioning of a new 2.16 MGD Water Treatment Plant for iron and manganese removal, including space for PFAS Treatment to meet future regulations.

Site Construction commenced in June 2022. The foundation is completed, and the green sand filter vessels have been installed. It is anticipated that the contractor will complete the installation of walls and be ready to begin installation of roof trusses by July 2023. The project is on track for startup in April of 2024.

On behalf of the Town of Sharon, EP is conducting a drinking water pilot treatability study at Wellfield 2. This source has a history of elevated iron and manganese concentrations that limited its capacity in recent years.

The goal of the pilot study is to identify a preferred technology for iron and manganese removal upstream of PFAS treatment for a future water treatment plant. This future treatment facility will allow the Town to utilize the full capacity of Wellfield 2 without sacrificing water quality.

In early December, Blueleaf Inc. delivered a biological filtration trailer, and the biological iron filters are already beginning to remove iron from the raw water. As the pilot study ramps up over the next several months, EP and Blueleaf will be studying multiple treatment techniques simultaneously and expect to expand the pilot study to evaluate nitrate removal.

A year ago, the Town of Wellesley’s Morses Pond water treatment plant was shut down due to elevated PFAS levels.

EP assisted the town in the procurement of state PFAS Treatment Grant funding and American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds for the design, permitting, public outreach and construction phase services for the install of a state of the art PFAS treatment system to get the plant back online this past Saturday, June 18.

Consistent communication and partnership with the Town contributed to the success of returning the plant to active service for the residents of Wellesley! #tapwaterdelivers
