EP recently assisted the Town of Abington in securing a MassTrails Grant to design an off-road shared use path between the Town campus on Gliniewicz Way to the grid of residential neighborhoods that line Hancock Street.

This new connection will fill a key gap in the Town’s pedestrian and bicycle network, connecting to the recently constructed shared use path extending from the Town Campus to Washington Street across Route 18. As part of this project, the Town will also install wayfinding from Broadmeadow Lane westerly to Ames Knoll State Park, with intentions to extend the SUP or another form of dedicated pedestrian and bicycle amenities to the Park in the future.

EP is currently designing the shared use path, with construction anticipated to begin in late 2024 – stay tuned!

Construction at the City of Gloucester’s Water Pollution Control Facility has been proceeding smoothly over the past four months!

The City, in part with funding from the U.S. Economic Development Administration, is improving the resilience of the WPCF for future coastal storms and sea level rise. The City’s general contractor, Methuen Construction, has installed the earthen berm along the western side of the site. Concrete work for the flood wall along Essex Avenue is proceeding and the steel sheet-pile wall along eastern side of the site will be completed soon.

Construction is anticipated to be complete later this fall and include installation of four self-deploying flood gates for vehicle and personnel access points to the WPCF.

Vision Zero is a strategy for eliminating all traffic fatalities and serious injuries while increasing safe, healthy equitable mobility for all users. First implemented in Sweden in the 1990s, Vision Zero is gaining momentum around the world, including many communities within the U.S.

To meet their ambitious goal of eliminating all traffic fatalities and serious injuries by 2035, EP worked with the Town of Lexington to create a Vision Zero Action Plan that outlines strategies for eliminating traffic-related deaths and serious injuries within Town limits and identifies top-priority safety-related projects for future funding opportunities. The strategies included in the plan are diverse and multidisciplinary, including infrastructure projects, policy and enforcement recommendations, public education tactics, and data collection strategies.

The final plan was approved by the Town’s Board of Selectmen in August and is available to view here!

Environmental Partners is currently assisting several municipalities with the development of Nutrient Source Identification Reports for their stormwater programs. As part of the NPDES Phase II Stormwater MS4 Permit; Massachusetts communities that do not have a Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) associated with their municipal waterways (such as the Charles River Watershed TMDL) but have known water quality impairments of Nitrogen and/or Phosphorus are tasked with the process of developing a Nutrient Source Identification Report.

By looking at a combination of factors including Soil Types, Hydrological Data, Contours, and Land Use / Landcover information, we have been able to identify the highest nutrient loading areas of the contributing areas to the impaired waterways. By using the nutrient loading data and a series of localized maps, we can provide the Town with recommended areas and parcels for potential stormwater BMP installations (either by new construction or stormwater retrofits). Based on the contributing land area of the Town’s impaired waterways and limited municipal land to work with; some of the recommendations fall within the municipal road ROW – and examples could include Tree Box Filters or subsurface treatment structures.

We look forward to continuing the conversation on these projects as the MS4 communities look to install treatment options to not only comply with their MS4 Permit requirements, but to greatly reduce nutrient loading to our local waterways. This in turn will improve the stormwater water quality and overall natural resources of our region.
