EP recently assisted the Town of Abington in securing a MassTrails Grant to design an off-road shared use path between the Town campus on Gliniewicz Way to the grid of residential neighborhoods that line Hancock Street.

This new connection will fill a key gap in the Town’s pedestrian and bicycle network, connecting to the recently constructed shared use path extending from the Town Campus to Washington Street across Route 18. As part of this project, the Town will also install wayfinding from Broadmeadow Lane westerly to Ames Knoll State Park, with intentions to extend the SUP or another form of dedicated pedestrian and bicycle amenities to the Park in the future.

EP is currently designing the shared use path, with construction anticipated to begin in late 2024 – stay tuned!

The Brant Rock area serves as an important hub of activity for the Town of Marshfield. EP is designing much-needed safety improvements along Ocean Street and Island Street by incorporating geometric changes and providing enhanced pedestrian accommodations that promote traffic calming and improve pedestrian safety. This project is the first phase of a three-phase project focusing on the Brant Rock area.

The proposed project will reconfigure the intersection, creating a bullnose configuration to improve safety and accessibility for motorists and pedestrians. This configuration will promote slower vehicle speeds by eliminating excess pavement, reutilizing that space to provide a landscaped area and mountable truck apron. To improve pedestrian safety, ADA-compliant crosswalks and curb ramps along all three approaches to the intersection will be implemented. Crossing distances will be dramatically reduced from the inclusion of median refuge islands along each leg of the intersection.

The Town received first Complete Streets funding of $500,000 to pay for some of the construction cost. Construction will start in April and anticipated to be completed by the end of this year.

EP is assisting the Lawrence Redevelopment Authority with performing a traffic study that will aid their ambitious redevelopment plans throughout east Lawrence.

Consisting of eight substantial mixed-use developments, each comprised of multiple parcels, a phased approach is being taken to understand mitigation required at various thresholds of development. The study assesses the influences that transit, biking, and walking can have to reduce vehicle use and decrease the need for vehicle-centric solutions within this urban setting. Given the proximity of multiple public transportation services, each development is envisioned as a Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) to capitalize on the existing public transportation infrastructure.

EP’s traffic models take into consideration envisioned improvements for all users and all modes of transportation. This comprehensive approach enables the City to identify existing opportunities and limitations and proactively plan for future growth and development.

A Complete Street is one that makes travel safe, comfortable, convenient, and accessible for all travel modes – including walking, biking, transit, and vehicles – for people of all ages, and abilities.

EP is working with the Town of Andover, MA to improve the travel experience for all users through the development of an Active Transportation Plan and Complete Streets Prioritization Plan. The Active Transportation Plan will provide a framework for expanding pedestrian and bicycle use in Town through establishing design criteria, proposed bicycle and pedestrian networks, and preferred typical sections for various types of roadways. This plan will feed into the Town’s Prioritization Plan to identify high-priority projects for improving safety and comfort for all users throughout Town.

This effort has generated enthusiasm throughout Town, with more than 2,800 comments received on the Public Comment Tool this year. Scheduled for completion in Spring 2024, the project’s online dashboard provides an opportunity for the public and other stakeholders to dive into the details. Check out more at the Town’s website here: https://andoverma.gov/1076/Complete-Streets

To improve pedestrian and bicyclist safety, access, and comfort along Washington Street, EP assisted the Town of Abington in winning another round of Complete Streets Funding to implement ADA-accessible sidewalks and dedicated bicycle lanes.

The project improved pedestrian and bicycle access to Beaver Brook Elementary School and sports fields, as well as residential neighborhoods, and commercial areas along Washington Street. The project will also provide a much-needed connection to the newly constructed shared-use path along Lincoln Boulevard, from the destinations along the subject portion of Washington Street to Abington High School, Abington Town Hall and, Abington’s Public Library. Work also includes the reconstruction of sidewalk and curb ramps to achieve ADA compliance, and installation of on-road bicycle lane striping or Sharrow markings with adjacent signage along Washington Street.

The project as a whole will be instrumental for providing a comprehensive bicycle and pedestrian network in the heart of Abington between destinations where true demand exists for on-road cycling. Construction is currently underway and anticipated to be completed in the Fall.

In Chester MA, neighborhood roadways near the historic railroad museum and the Westfield River have been experiencing significant flooding and pavement deterioration. In 2019, EP completed a complex stormwater model to assess the existing conditions and then designed improvements to culverts and drainage swales to minimize the flooding and restore the roadways through pavement reclamation.

The first phase of that project is scheduled for completion in October, including the construction of an underground 4’x4’ concrete box culvert storage system to capture storm flows and then moderate their discharge to the existing system through a 10-inch diameter orifice.
